Bringing The Sacred Back To Earth
61Sacred Earth
Maybe separation from the rest of nature has happened because the majority of human beings live in cities, divorced from the natural cycle of life.
Pavements isolate feet from grass and soil, houses protect bodies from the elements and cut them off from the sky, wind and wild creatures. Cars transport people quickly and efficiently depriving them of the sensual experience of the journey along the way.
Food taken from Supermarket shelves free of mud, insects and blood, is a different commodity to food grown or raised at home. No hands need to get dirty when preparing it. No animal needs to be slaughtered when eating it.
Clinically raised apart from the consumer it tastes pretty clinical too. (If you've ever grown your own potatoes you will know what I mean).
The cycles of life; planting the seeds in Spring, flowering in Summer, harvesting in Autums and storing in Winter are overlooked while rushing from job to home to tv or computer and then to bed.
Birth and youth are honoured while, rather than being treasured as part of the cycle of life on Earth: old age and death are ignored as though the ignorance of them will make them go away.
Diamonds and jewels are seen as precious, maybe because they last and are rare. The earth is looked upon as brown stuff, dirt, so much common muck beneath the feet, but the earth is more than priceless. Without that brown stuff full of worms and insects, stones and sand no life could flourish. No Coffee, no Internet, no fast cars.
Perhaps thankfulness is the first step in honouring something, in this case thankfulness for the bounty that is the Earth, our home. So lets give thanks for the seasons and for teeming human and animal life in all its forms and for the incredible abundance of the plant, mineral and insect kingdoms.
In reconnecting the Sacred to Earth there is much to be gained: so much joy, so much sensual pleasure, feelings of fulfillment and purpose. Humanity is indeed fortunate to have such a beautiful place to live. Lets wake up every morning and appreciate the real wealth which we all enjoy, this our home - this Sacred Planet, Earth.
